Training Workshops for Clerks of Session
Highlighting Leadership and Administrative Event
Posted February 25, 2025
There has been training for clerks of session at the Annual Leadership and Administrative Event for as long as Rev. Randall Clow can remember. As Stated Clerk of Beaver-Butler Presbytery, Clow has been conducting the training since 2022. Normally he sees a dozen or so clerks in attendance. Their experience ranges from those who are “just getting started” to those who have “seen it all.”
“Clerks are normally very orderly people.” Clow says. Clow has found that clerks care about the details and want to do their job well, so they arrive with questions. During the workshops attendees often seek answers together though “group share” time. Clow explains, “There have been years when the clerks come so prepared with questions that we barely tackled the syllabus I’d prepared!”
Clow knows that clerks have a tough job. Their responsibilities include orderly taking of Session minutes and filing the Yearly Statistical Report. “There is a lot to do!” Clow says. The annual training, that is offered through the Clerks of Session workshops, provides a good foundation by getting questions answered. And The Clerk of Session Handbook that he hands out provides many resources that Clow has gathered over the years.
Clow hopes to see many clerks of session from our churches as he leads two workshops—Swimming in the Shallow End and Diving Deeper—during this year’s event on Sunday, March 23.
