Nine church scholarships were awarded during the worship service on July 9 at Buffalo Presbyterian Church, Sarver. All nine students were sponsored by members of the church and received awards of $300 each toward their upcoming expenses for the 2023-2024 school year. Funds to support the awards were withdrawn from the Scholarship and Memorial Fund accounts.

The list of students follows, including the names of the schools they plan to attend and the names of their sponsors.

Olivia Bauer, Butler County Community College; granddaughter of Wayne and Candy Bauer

Madisen Paige Bricker, Community College of Allegheny County; granddaughter of Howard and Karen Bricker

Victoria Hoburg, Carlow University; granddaughter of Bill and Linda Maroney

Melissa Karastury, Slippery Rock University; daughter of Dave and Debbie Karastury

Dylan McCorkle, Butler County Community College; grandson of Jerry and Marlene Bundy

Joshua Pogue, Butler County Community College; grandson of the late Nick and June Golojuh

Virginia Elaine Potts, University of Hawaii; granddaughter of Don and Virginia Shirey

Sidney Grace Shirey, University of Cincinnati; granddaughter of Don and Virginia Shirey

Joseph Stillions, Seton Hill College; grandson of Bill and Linda Maroney

The scholarship award program was established by the late Charles and Erma Barton at the time of their death. The scholarship account is held by New Covenant Funds and provides interest money to award scholarships. Since the number of applicants this year was large, additional money was needed and withdrawn from the Memorial Fund as the session decided to reward all applicants—an intentional way to honor young people related to the church.

The worship time included the service of communion and was followed by a luncheon that provided a time for fellowship for families of the honorees and the congregation.
