Changes to Special Offerings

Posted January 6, 2026

The 226th General Assembly (2024) approved changes to the church wide Special Offerings to take effect January 1, 2026. These changes were recommended by the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board through the Special Offerings Review Task Force.

The biggest change is there are three offerings—One Great Hour of Sharing, World Communion, and Christmas Joy.

This means the Pentecost Offering has been discontinued. However, all previous recipient causes–children-at-risk, youth, and young adults–will continue to be funded through the church wide Special Offerings.

This also means the Peace & Global Witness Offering has been transformed into the World Communion Offering. Previously congregations and mid councils were invited to retain a percentage of gifts from this offering. Starting in 2026, there will be a new grant-making program to support local and regional ministries for which congregations or mid councils will be able to apply.

Overall, causes, rather than programs will receive funds. This does not mean currently funded programs will no longer receive funding.

Three Offerings

One Great Hour of Sharing
  • Traditionally received on Palm Sunday, Easter but also during the Lenten season
  • Causes supported: disaster, hunger, poverty, immigration, migration, refugees, and  climate change
World Communion
  • Traditionally received on World Communion Sunday (October 4) but can be received anytime during A Season of Preparation
  • Causes supported: peacemaking, global witness, ecumenical and interfaith relations, racial justice, and gender justice
  • A grant program allows sessions, presbyteries and synods to apply for funds to do ministry around these cause areas.
Christmas Joy
  • Traditionally received on the fourth Sunday of Advent, Christmas Eve or during Advent
  • Causes supported: children-at-risk, youth and young adults, leadership development for people of color, Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color, servants of the Church in need through the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions
