Calvin Presbyterian Church, Zelienople, PA

2:45—3:45 p.m.
Special Q&A Session for Interested Attendees

More and more people see the church as less and less relevant to their lives. We spend more time fighting within our denominations and churches than we do in reaching out to a rapidly changing culture. The world is changing and we’re struggling to keep up. We don’t know what to hold onto and what to let go of as we adapt Christianity to a world in the grips of information overload.

A Day with Brian McLaren will explore concepts from his book, The Great Spiritual Migration, helping us understand how to be church in an ever-changing world.

Brian McLaren has been on the forefront of forging creative congregations since 1982.

Starting in a living room not far from the University of Maryland campus, Brian gathered twenty spiritual seekers from nearly eleven Christian backgrounds—Catholic, Protestant, non-charismatic, charismatic, denominational, nondenominational. They shared a common yearning to create an exciting, effective church that welcomed and embraced spiritual seekers of all kinds—churched, de-churched, or unchurched.

He became the founding pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church, a nondenominational church in the Baltimore-Washington region. Along with Rick Warren (Saddleback Church) and Bill Hybels (Willow Creek Church), Brian was considered one of the first leaders of the growing nondenominational movement.

Becoming increasingly concerned with how to reach out to a population that’s become disaffected with church—denominational and nondenominational—he became a leader in the growing Emergent Church movement. He has been guiding pastors and churches on how to reach those who’ve walked away from Christianity but not God.

He continues to think about how ALL churches can adapt to a changing world. His ideas can be provocative and sometimes antagonizing, but they are always thoughtful and thought-provoking.

Our day with Brian will explore concepts from his book, The Great Spiritual Migration, helping us understand how to be church in an ever-changing world without either putting our heads in the sand or chasing every trend that comes along.
